If you’re anything like us, your Instagram feed will have been flooded with smooth, flat jade and rose quartz stones over the past couple of years, touted as the next best thing in skincare. Turns out the skinfluencers know their stuff – gua sha is more than just a good-looking addition to your #shelfie.
Gua sha (‘gwa shah’). It’s an ancient healing technique that’s been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. In a nutshell, it’s the practice of using the tool (the gua sha) along energy lines, removing toxins from your lymphatic system.
Still not convinced?
Gua sha helps with pretty much any skin condition – fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, dark circles, pigmentation…we could go on. It also encourages lymphatic drainage, so you can say goodbye to puffiness (too many late nights taking their toll? Pop your tool in the fridge and use it in your morning skincare routine. They’ll be none the wiser).
Skin aside, a couple of minutes of gua sha in the morning is good for the soul. It’s like a mini meditative experience - the perfect substitute if you’ve snoozed through your morning yoga class.
How you should use it…
You don’t want to tug the skin so first things first, apply a facial oil after cleansing for a little movement.
Start with the neck, using gentle upwards strokes and stopping at the jawline. When you’re ready to move to the face, start at the jaw and work outward. Move your way up the face and repeat with your cheeks, under-eyes (be extra gentle here babes, the skin here is fragile), eyelids, and forehead.
And how you shouldn’t…
There is such a thing as too much gua sha. Don’t scrape an area of your skin more than 10 times as it could cause inflammation. For you sensitive skin types out there, stick to doing gua sha two-three times a week. Oh – and never neglect the neck.
